Coffee Cups 402 and 403

This meeting is sponsored by the Office of Rural Health Policy (HRSA/HHS). It is one of the first meetings where officers from State Offices of Rural Health, the Indian Health Service, and Border Health met as a region.

It was a useful and productive meeting.

As meeting venues go, it was a poor choice. The Grand Canyon hotels are for tourists and not for business travellers. No WiFi and no irons in the room.

It was beautiful, if you like that sort of thing. I am beginning to, like nature that is. But at the time I was going through withdrawals and desperately seeking broadband.

Cup 402 sits on the balcony of the meeting room and looks west towards the North Rim… is that right?

I have had many wonderful mentors. Mr. N. (who went to the Humphrey – where I wanted to go) taught me to always bring a double-insulated cup. This way your drink will stay warmer/colder longer and you can take more. As usual he was right. The coffee cups that catering provided were too small. 403.

Coffee Cup 401 – I’m baaaack…

As I mentioned before, the conceit of this blog is that the posts record the day???s coffee and not when written. Dates and times may be adjusted so that the coffees appear on the day consumed. This will be the case for these next few posts. As Presh explains, I have been without my feed.

On the flight over, it was my pleasure to sit next to Ms. M.

Usually, when I fly, I immediately put on my noise canceling headphones. This is my shield to protect me from friendly extroverts. It allows me to smile, pull the earpiece to the side (in what I hope is not too dramatic a gesture), listen politely, maybe comment, and then place the earpiece back. Even the most edgy extrovert gets the hint after awhile.

I first ran into Ms. M. on the flight over to the big city. She commented on my iPod Shuffle. Later at the gate before heading to Phoenix, we chatted again. When we found ourselves seated next to each other on the flight to Phoenix it seemed rude to immediately go shields up.

Life is very interesting when you pay attention.

It turns out that Ms. M. is a very creative woman at play in the world. She is a traveler in the truest sense and she inspired me. She is a writer who has chosen adventure. It was an exhilarating talk. We talked about writing and she asked me a great question. Why do I write? Or what do I write? I forget what the exact question was but it helped me find an answer that I really liked.

I write to see with fresh eyes.

When I finally did put on the headphones it was not to hide but so that I could process what I learned. It was a short conversation but she added a most interesting vector to my life.

Our first stop in Phoenix was Krispy Kreme. This time the Hot Light was on and Josh (my co-worker) got to taste his first original glazed. Eight hours later we arrived at the Grand Canyon. 401.
